Standpipes

I saw the Rudy Burckhardt exhibit ("New York, N. Why? Photographs 1937-1940") at the Met on Sunday. Burckhardt's photography doesn't grab me, but this one -- entitled "Pair of Siamese Standpipes, NYC, 1939" -- caught my eye:
