I recognized the technical flaws, but thought that other aspects of the pictures overcame them. The expression on the man's face, the colors in the woman's blouse bracketed by the red bags, the struggles of being old in our crowded, fast-paced city. But, alas, they obviously did not work for at least one viewer.
Who knows; they worked for me at one time, they may not in the future.

1st is surrounded by boring distractions, 2nd is out of focus and plumped up with saturation and contrast.
