Substitute

I took this photograph a few mornings ago while walking south down Sixth Avenue (i.e., "Avenue of the Americas") in the Village:

I'm 99% sure that before September 2001, this view would have included, instead of SOM's bland "7 World Trade Center" in the distant background, the Twin Towers themselves.

Gin bottles are a poor substitute for the missing towers. But though we may know whom to blame for their demise, where do we point the finger for their replacement?
